The Scholar Experience

More than a scholarship

The A. James Clark Scholars Program incorporates these required activities into the Duke Engineering curriculum without increasing the total course count required for graduation.

Scholars receive up to $10,000 per year to offset loans, work-study, and summer work requirements. Ten students are chosen from each entering class.

incoming summer

  • Five week in-person summer program in Durham, NC to prepare incoming Clark Scholars for college 
  • Program dates for 2023: June 25-July 29
  • Summer program introduces Scholars to the content, pacing, and expected mastery level for college courses, introduces incoming Scholars to Duke and Durham, and builds cohort cohesion
  • Living expenses paid for by the Program, with an additional stipend provided

First Year

  • Orientation program on leadership and resilience
  • Group service experience in Durham, North Carolina

FIRST SUMMER

  • Focused, summer-long international entrepreneurship program 
  • Technical skills bootcamp with an internship to apply skills to a real-world project
  • Program costs and living expenses paid for by the Program, with an additional stipend provided

Sophomore Year

  • Student Founder Program – discover customer needs and market opportunities
  • Lead group service experience in Durham, North Carolina

Junior Year

  • Prototyping or advanced design experience
  • Courses on startup management and accounting
  • Leadership training

Senior Year

  • Job placement support
  • Clark Scholars celebration at graduation
